Drive D2 VF
82:
The D2 Vario Cut is the first ski in
the world whose radius automatically adapts to the relevant conditions. The
greater the pressure applied to the ski, the wider the ski becomes at the
front and tail and the smaller the radius becomes, allowing short turns to
be carved with as much precision as long, fast turns. The wider 82 mm
version delivers this performance for effortless Off-Piste skiing.
Double Deck
VC Tecnology:
A 'variable radius' ski is
easier to evaluate than you might think. It’s supposed to change its radius
on the fly according to speed and edge angle, and the Atomic D2 VC 82 indeed
achieves that goal seamlessly. The Atomic D2 Vario Cut 82 isn’t a race ski,
but a comfortable mixed-terrain Cadillac / Porsche of a ski that will help
you to make the most beautifully carved turns you've ever put to snow.
Atomic Double Deck technology is best described as two skis literally being
built into one. The two skis, called 'decks', can move freely and flex
unimpeded of one another thanks to the connecting pieces made of elastomers.
The relatively soft lower deck (adapter deck) absorbs vibrations while
remaining in constant contact with the snow, allowing for greater stability
through turns than conventional skis as well as very smooth skiing. The
stabilizing upper deck (control deck) distributes the power and pressure
generated by the skier, reading those impulses and transmitting them to the
lower deck.
In this D2 Vario Cut 82 version, the lower deck is longitudinally split a
good distance down at tip and tail with a flexible plastic insert spanning
the gap. As the ski flexes, the split widens, effectively making the tip and
tail of the ski to grow fatter, which increases the sidecut of the ski on
the fly.
By simply bending the ski,
the sidecut radius can change by as much as 6 meters. That’s about the
difference between a slalom and a GS ski.
The result is a ski that
changes its shape to whatever sort of radius is appropriate for the turn you
are trying to make. Atomic says that this makes it possible to carve a
perfect arc no matter what size turn you are looking for.
We tested the Atomic
DoubleDeck VC 82 and found the technology to be seamless. The skis were
friendly and very easy to ride with no hint of the technology going on
underfoot.
The result is a ski that
performs and functions at a higher level than anything we've seen before.
